So the seedings are out.

Pot 1 is everybody you'd expect except France.

We're in Pot 2 with the other CONCACAF teams and the Asian teams.

Pot 3 is Africa and the unseeded South Americans.

And Pot 4 is the unseeded Europeans.

What's your dream draw? I wouldn't mind playing Italy again; they're usually slow starters and we really brawled with them last time. After that, give me Algeria (avoiding the sub-Saharan African teams who will essentially be playing at home) and Slovenia (minnowish), please and thank you.

Str8red...sometimes dreams DO come true!  laugh
England might stumble out of the blocks...then you got what you asked for-------------Algeria and minnowish Slovenia (who caught Russia on a bad day).

GOOD JOB!

Can you now ask for 3 wins in group play, so that the USA avoids having to play Germany in the round of 16?
Please and thank you!  Grin

Personally, I am more worried about England than Germany.  This German team lacks the precision and the talent on top of previous teams.

True, EW, the Germans don't have the panache that they had in the past, but what they do have is an understanding of how to play tournament soccer.  What did that one English coach say?  Soccer is a game played by 22 people over 90 minutes and in the end Germany wins!  Look at the US v Germany in 2002 - the US was the better side on the day - but Germany won!  Never underestimate Deutschland!

You think Yaya Toure is gona drop . He battled his way to a Barcelona stay, Busquets hasn't got anything on him, and helped them to a unprecedented double Treble last season playing an integral part of the success..!!. Should be a +1 imo, but he no way on earth is gona -1.. A Solid 92 he is indeed!/

Reuters) - Tourists in South Africa including soccer fans heading to the World Cup must guard against mosquito bites and avoid contact with raw meat due to an outbreak of Rift Valley fever, the World Health Organization said on Tuesday.

Sports  |  Health

Officials in South Africa, the host of the 2010 World Cup from June 11 to July 11, have reported 172 human cases of the animal viral disease this year, including 15 deaths, it said.

Many tourists visit South Africa's game parks and the WHO warned visitors to avoid contact with dead animals -- another way of catching the disease.

"People should be aware there is Rift Valley Fever in several provinces and should take precautions when visiting areas where they could be exposed to animals that could be infected," WHO spokeswoman Aphaluck Bhatiasevi told Reuters.

A female German tourist who visited game reserves was confirmed as having the disease upon return from South Africa last month, the WHO said in a statement. Three other travelers fell ill with similar symptoms but all four have recovered.

The virus usually causes relatively mild flu-like symptoms and neck stiffness in people, progressing sometimes to hallucinations, dizziness or even coma, according to the WHO.

A small percentage of victims develop a hemorrhagic form which causes them to vomit blood, pass blood in feces, or bleed from the nose, gums, or skin. Half of such patients die.

Human cases have been confirmed in Free State Province, Eastern Cape Province, Northern Cape Province, Western Cape and North West Province, most after contact with infected livestock.

MOSQUITO BITES

The WHO, a United Nations agency, said it was not advising any international travel restrictions to or from South Africa.

"However, WHO recommends that visitors to South Africa, especially those intending to visit farms and/or game reserves, avoid coming into contact with animal tissues or blood, avoid drinking unpasteurized or uncooked milk or eating raw meat."

"All travelers should take appropriate precautions against mosquito bites (use of mosquito nets, insect repellents)," it said.

Most human infections result from contact with the blood or organs of infected animals, according to the WHO.

It can also be caught from the bites of infected mosquitoes or other flies.

There is also some evidence that humans may become infected with Rift Valley Fever by drinking the unpasteurized or uncooked milk of infected animals, it said.

The virus can be transmitted through the handling of animal tissue during slaughtering or butchering, assisting with animal births, veterinary procedures or from disposing of carcasses.

Herders, farmers, slaughterhouse workers and veterinarians are at higher risk of infection.

A vaccine for humans has been developed but is not licensed and is not commercially available, according to the WHO.

Here's the prelim 30 man roster.
Not too many surprises.

I'd like to see Goodson, Marshall and Bornstein dropped from the defenders.
I am not familiar with Bedoya, and there are no mids that I instantly can say that I think do not belong.
The forwards ?   I am still not convinced about Jozy, am unfamiliar with Gomez, and the other four remind me of the old tagline about Saturday Night Live  "The Not Ready For Prime Time Players".
Goalies?   Why bring back Hahneman?   If Howard is #1, and Guzan is the young understudy, why bring in an older fart who never lived up to his potential like Hahneman?   That is a head scratcher!   And I like the guy!

Usual suspects for USAEmail Print Share
There were few surprises in the United States' 30-man preliminary squad for this summer's World Cup in South Africa.

Bob Bradley: Sticks with tried and tested
Coach Bob Bradley included five Premier League players in his selection, while Villarreal's Jozy Altidore spent part of the season at Hull City and Los Angeles Galaxy's Landon Donovan was on loan at Everton prior to the Major League Soccer campaign.

The squad will meet up in Princeton on May 15 and play friendlies with Czech Republic in Conneticut on May 25 and Turkey in Philadelphia on May 29 prior to the final 23-man squad being submitted to FIFA by the June 1 deadline.

Charlie Davies has not been named. The Sochaux striker was injured in a fatal car crash last October and returned to training only last month. Freddy Adu, once a child prodigy linked with the world's best clubs, has also missed out.

DaMarcus Beasley, who announced he will be leaving Rangers, is one of two players selected from the Scottish champions, along with Maurice Edu.

Bradley told ussoccer: "Throughout the past three years a number of players have contributed to our journey toward South Africa and we appreciate all of their efforts.

"We are very excited to get this group together to begin our pre-World Cup training camp as we continue to prepare for the challenge of the World Cup."

The United States were drawn in Group C alongside Algeria, Slovenia and England, their opponents in their first game in Rustenburg on June 12. It will be the USA's sixth successive World Cup finals appearance.

USA's provisional squad:

Goalkeepers: Brad Guzan (Aston Villa), Tim Howard (Everton), Marcus Hahnemann (Wolves)

Defenders: Carlos Bocanegra (Rennes), Jonathan Bornstein (Chivas USA), Steve Cherundolo (Hannover), Jay DeMerit (Watford), Clarence Goodson (IK Start), Chad Marshall (Columbus Crew), Oguchi Onyewu (AC Milan), Heath Pearce (FC Dallas), Jonathan Spector (West Ham)

Midfielders: DaMarcus Beasley (Rangers), Alejandro Bedoya (Orebro), Michael Bradley (Borussia Monchengladbach), Ricardo Clark (Houston Dynamo), Clint Dempsey (Fulham), Landon Donovan (Los Angeles Galaxy), Maurice Edu (Rangers), Benny Feilhaber (Aarhus), Stuart Holden (Bolton), Sacha Kljestan (Chivas USA), Robbie Rogers (Columbus Crew), Jose Torres (Pachuca)

Forwards: Jozy Altidore (Villarreal), Edson Buddle (Los Angeles Galaxy), Brian Ching (Houston Dynamo), Robbie Findley (Real Salt Lake), Herculez Gomez (Puebla), Eddie Johnson (Aris Thessaloniki).

Take from the game today -

Edu cannot play central defense.   Gooch has more recovery work to do, but he should still go to South Africa.  Guzan was rusty.
Goodson, Edu, Holden, Gomez, Torres, Buddle and Beaseley should be on the final roster, Bornstein, Klijesta, Rogers, and Pearce not.
Still not sure about Spector, Marshall, Bedoya, Fielhaber, Ching and Johnson.

That's my opinion, now tear at it!

US National team selected.
About the only change I would have made is dropping Bornstein, but I can see why is included.   Findley would also have been a potential drop, but who to replace him with?   Neither Ching nor Johnson seem to be anymore worthy.

This does give us a clue about the offense that Bradley is looking at - three of the 4 forwards are speed merchants, and the 4th could be a type of "super-sub".

Unless the USA goes with a 3 man defense, or a single forward (mistake!) then therre will be 4 mids -   That would seem to be Clark and Bradley in the middle with Donovan and Dempsey wide.

Just perhaps we might see:
                                                      Altidore (Striker)
                                   DOnovan                                    Dempsey
                   X?                                   Bradley                                       X?

                                                    Four defenders
                                                            Howard

The old 4-3-2-1.   The midfield could be tightened up so that it is a shallow triangle with Holden and Bradley on top with Clark at the bottom.     This formation really exposes our flanks, though.

Goalkeepers: Brad Guzan (Aston Villa, England), Marcus Hahnemann (Wolverhampton, England), Tim Howard (Everton, England).

Defenders: Carlos Bocanegra (Rennes, France), Jonathan Bornstein (Chivas USA), Steve Cherundolo (Hannover, Germany), Jay DeMerit (Watford, England), Clarence Goodson (IK Start, Norway), Oguchi Onyewu (AC Milan, Italy), Jonathan Spector (West Ham, England).

Midfielders: DaMarcus Beasley (Glasgow Rangers, Scotland), Michael Bradley (Borussia Moenchengladbach, Germany), Ricardo Clark (Eintracht Frankfurt, Germany), Clint Dempsey (Fulham, England), Landon Donovan (Los Angeles), Maurice Edu (Glasgow Rangers, Scotland), Benny Feilhaber (AGF Aarhus, Denmark), Stuart Holden (Bolton, England), Jose Torres (Pachuca, Mexico).

Forwards: Jozy Altidore (Hull, England), Edson Buddle (Los Angeles), Robbie Findley (Salt Lake), Herculez Gomez (Puebla, Mexico).

so what does this say about the MLS?  Only 4 of 23 from our national (+1 soon to be +2) league.  Is MLS simply a 'minor league' and that you must go overseas to develop the tactical and physical skills necessary to make the national squad?  (Though that doesn't seemed to have worked too well for some either!)

Yes, The MLS is a minor league when compared to the leagues in Europe. Unless you are Landon Donovon and can command a big salary than you have to go to Europe to get a respectable paycheck. I Think as MLS salaries rise you will see more players stay home.

OK, this is weird.   Diego Maradona needs two bidets in his hotel suite?    I do not even want to guess, let alone know, the explanation for this.   But I am going to show the article to my sons as yet another reason NOT TO DO DRUGS!!!

England's players will wear oxygen masks in their hotel rooms to prepare for playing at elevation. Brazil manager Dunga has banned his players from having sex on game days.

And then there is Argentina manager Diego Maradona, who only added to his prima donna legend last week when the South African Sunday Times reported that builders were remodeling both bathrooms in the two-bedroom suite he will call home during the tournament so that they could accommodate a pair of state-of-the-art bidets.

AP Photo/Themba Hadebe
Argentina coach Diego Maradona arrives with his team in Johannesburg.

The bidets, which cost roughly $450, each feature a warm-air blow-dryer and front and rear bidet wands. To accommodate the new fixtures, both bathrooms had to be remodeled at a cost of more than $2,000 each. And this comes after workers created the two-bedroom suite by knocking down a wall and combining two existing bedrooms.

Top players going down fast already - likely that both Didier Drogba and Rio Ferdinand will miss the World Cup.  Drogba with a broken arm against Japan and Ferdinand with a knee injury in training. Add those to Essien and Ballack already out and possibly Pirlo as well - going to be a lot of stars missing this summer if they keep going out at this rate.

jozy Altidore should recover and be able to play against England.  Without Rio, the England defense is going to be missing 2-3 of the projected starters.   It might be possible to surprise them in the first match.

Japan lost a defender, and North Korea tried to slip a forward in as a GK but got caught.   The Aussie keeper is banged up but should be fully capable by opening day.  Isn't there a Brasilian that is hurt as well?

For Brazil it was the keeper Cesar who had to be taken off in the last warm up game. Shouldn't be a problem for them as they have Doni and Gomes as backup, (and Gomes has been brilliant for Spurs this season and better than any of the England keepers!)

Terry, Johnson and Cole are all fit so only one starter missing in the back 4 for England. Barry may even be recovered by the first match so they may have their holding mid back as well. Assuming King plays in place of Ferdinand, the only weakness for the US to exploit will be pace down the middle if they can get one on one against King.

Yep, Bridge was the backup for Cole and didn't come, so if Cole gets injured it's a huge drop off to the backup Warnock. But Johnson and Cole are both first choice. Cole is consistently world class but with Johnson you're not sure what you will get - world class one day but error prone the next.

Spain is looking hot right now.   What a walloping they gave to Poland.   And their injuries are getting better, not worse.    Their only flaw may be an overall softness and a soft defense.   The only two teams that I would give even money on against Spain right now are Italy and Germany, and probably not even them.  But their coherent, cohesive approach to teh game, their tactical discipline, and their ability to counter are what is needed to defeat spain right now.  Think Inter vs Barca.

Holland and Brasil would try ot play a skillful, attacking game.   While seeing such teams against this Spanish side would be a glorious treat, neither has the defensive capability to stifle Spain.

Ashley Cole broke his ankle in a challenge w/Donovan in late March (timing?).  It was first thought he might not be back from that injury in time for the World Cup.

I did not see the second game because of work but truly think South Africa should have won the first game. Mexico dodged a bullet for sure and looked slow at the back more, almost getting beat a couple times on long balls over the top. The one off the post was too bad for South Africa..... and the miss touch by to the defenders side earlier in the half or they probably are up 2-0 even before the post ringer.

I'll be getting up at 4 a.m. to watch the early game and then head to the Rover in Kirkland for the others during the day. They opened today for the 7 a.m. game and actually had a few people there...breakfast was good as well. drinks

Is it me, or does Anelka look like he could care less?

Nothing new there - I'm sure that's part of the reason that despite great talent, he's been through 9 different clubs in 15 seasons and earned the nickname "Le Sulk" while at Arsenal  Smiley

Like the effort of the US so far, but in the end we just don't match up.  Clark got beat by Gerrard for the goal.  Does that surprise anyone?  Our wings may be slightly better than England's.  I like our keeper, but is there any other position where you'd take a US player over his Brit counterpart?  Hate to say it, but coming in I predicted 3-0 England.  Looks like a similar start to the 2006 WC.  Hopefully the next two games will turn out better for the US.  Still, one second could change everything, i.e., hope springs eternal in US soccer!

When I saw that Clark was starting as the Def Mid, I decided to change my selection from a draw to an English victory.     Sure enough, Clark screwed up 3 minutes in.
Pretty good result for the USA though, if not for me.   I'll take that anytime.

Watching Ticket to S. Africa on FSC and the ticker on the bottom --- someone wrote in--

England got lucky if we would have had Beckham we'd have crushed them. Go USA.

I had to laugh........ serious soccer fan there hu? Hard to believe the person wrote in and that they actually ran that one.
