Very good soccer fans at Seattle U, glad they are recognized. I don't know how the magazine could put together a poll like this and leave out Cal Poly or Santa Barbara. Stands packed, kids screaming at the opposing team the entire match, tortillas flying in the air! It's crazy.

http://goviks.com/news/2010/8/4/WSOC_0804102304.aspxPortland State welcomes 10 newcomers to this year's team, eight freshmen and two juniors, to aid in the Viks first bid to the NCAA Tournament. Seven of the eight new freshman are from Washington, while only Ariel Snyder (Newberg) represents the state of Oregon.
Walk-on junior Alexandra Nitsche and transfer Melissa Trammell will round out the rest of the PSU newcomers. Trammell, a native Yakima, Wash., transferred to the Park Blocks from Pepperdine, where she appeared in four matches last season and earned West Coast Conference Commissioner's "Bronze Honors."

Great local matches the end of the month. Simon Fraser @ UW, 8/21 @ 5pm. SPU @ UW, 8/27 @ 4:30pm. Both are "exhibition games".

Really? Tortillas? In Santa Barbara at a soccer game? It's a tradition that was taken from the basketball team that goes back to the late 80's. Back then, the Big West had teams like UNLV and New Mexico playing hoop in the same conference, and those were the heyday's of Runnin' Rebel basketball. During that time, UCSB had a run of three NCAA appearances in a row, and the school was basketball crazy. They play(ed) in a place called the Thunderdome, which Jim Valvano once said was the toughest place to play in the country, and he had to play at Cameron at Duke every year. Somewhere around the end of that run, tortillas would be thrown on the floor after the first Gaucho bucket of the game, and the tradition stuck. As the Gauchos have developed the soccer program over the last 5-7 years, the tradition has carried over. What you have there is 20,000 students that live somewhat on an island in a town called Isla Vista just outside of Santa Barbara. The "town" is adjacent to campus, and most students live in one of the hundreds and hundreds of apartment complexes there. Not a lot of families, and even less responsible adults. It fosters a substantial party atmosphere, and it can become one large tailgate prior to games. Then, everyone stumbles to games/matches. It is quite the atmosphere to say the least. Of course, everyone is over 21. Without a football team, and most of its' athletic prowess coming from the swimming and water polo teams, when a team gets good, the students flock to it, and really become the 12th or 6th man. But, you have to have success. I can tell you that the soccer matches were not like that before the success. Any college campus tour should include a trip to Isla Vista. Needs to be seen to be believed. Be prepared, though, the academic standards are equal to that of Cal and UCLA. You have to be able to study as hard as you party.

Oregon State v SPU 0-0 in Corvallis on Saturday.
So what was the score with the UW/Simon Fraser game? From the UW website narrative UW midfielder D. Gray scored and SFU had an own goal. What about the other side? ?Nada?

NCAA rules prohibit them from posting the score of a 'scrimmage.' LOL. We can assume the final was 2:0, Dawgs, though. More weekend scores:SeattleU 0:3 Oregon State (women) WSU 1:0 Utah Zags 0:2 Florida State (women)

3-peat for the Bruins! Ask Squash about the Huskies, he has some opinions about how the program is run.

After watching the final four last year I'm not surprised to see Akron listed 1st, however even with graduations I'm surprised to see Wake Forest 7th as they are very impressive. Guess we will see..

Be prepared, though, the academic standards are equal to that of Cal and UCLA. You have to be able to study as hard as you party. Not too certain that it really matters if you are an athlete. UCSB has a very large percentage of students who transfer in from calif JCs. My guess is that they were academically ineligible coming out of high school even though athletic admission standards are much lower than for regular students.

Seattle University Men will be playing Western on Thursday the 26th at Championship field at 4:00. Should be a fun game to watch. With this being just a friendly should get to see a lot of players playing for both sides.

UW v SPU 1-1. UW had most of the run of play, especially in the first half. UW had some good chances but did not convert. SPU subbed in their front line and most of the midfield at half. UW gave their starters more playing time and subbed in toward the end of the game. After the break, SPU snuck a ball through the defense for breakaway goal. With the entire SPU bench on the field, UW scored on a corner kick with a beautiful header by Dylan Tucker-Ganges at the 72nd minute. The game got awfully physical for an exhibition. There is healthy aggressive play and this was not it. A few of the UW players are awfully proud. Pride will bring you down, brother. This, I believe is the weak area of UW...the head game in the sport.
