The Abyss from the Alliteration Apostle!!!BUYER BEWARE OF “B”
My experience – once you accept a ‘B’ spot, be prepared to stay there.
This is what I was told by several coaches over the years regarding choosing a team after tryouts………..
“Comparing bottom of ‘A’ to top of ‘B’ – if players are somewhat equal do not move players from ‘A’ to ‘B’. Those relegated ‘A’ players will probably leave the club and obviously the players already on ‘B’ are ok with playing ‘B’.
If a ‘B’ players ultimate goal is to gain a spot on the ‘A’ squad – leave the club for a year and then come back – you have a better chance of gaining a position on the top team from outside the club.
However, if a player is satisfied with ‘B’ (getting good training and surrounded by quality players), then by all means stay and continue to work on breaking through, but BUYER BEWARE.
Personally, all things being equal - I’d opt for a quality select team, than a small PDL club’s ‘B’ team – because eventually that ‘B’ team will struggle as players get frustrated and leave. Trust me – this WILL happen, so consider saving some money.
Obviously the bigger PDL clubs 'B' teams are as competitive as some smaller PDL clubs 'A' teams, so the above advice may not be applicable.
Now here’s an idea for those smaller PDL clubs – price ‘B’ teams significantly lower and you might retain those ‘B’ team players.
Select $200 / PDL $2,000 - is it worth 10 times as much?
Personally, I'm stepping back from the abyss.TALES IN BLACK & YELLOW PART 6!!The Road to Hawaii/Arkansas #6Financing the Trip! The only negative thing about going to the Far West Regional and other similar events is the fact that we are not paid for the games that we work. It becomes difficult for a guy like me because I’m used to making a dime or two when I referee games. Even though this is a hobby, it is a hobby that first became a way to finance my child’s (Redkard Waiting to Happen) ability to play at the high level of youth soccer. It has now become a way to buy myself old man toys: 20’s for the truck, TV for the bedroom and finally a new couch for the living room. The fact that Hawaii is the destination does create a financial burden for me. However, I’m willing to deal with since it will be my first time to our 50th State.
In the next couple of weeks I will be soliciting my home referee chapter and my home youth soccer association to see if they can throw a nickel or two my way to help with the cost of making the trip. I will also be refereeing bunch of games between now and June 13th. The question will be if I work youth games or adult games. With the Spring Challenge Cup and Championship Cup coming soon along with some youth tournaments coming up (10-14 games over a weekend can add up) there will be some opportunities to make some extra money there. The adult leagues actually pay more money per game; but one can only do only two or three games per day (weekends) because of the grind of a 90 minute game. Working the adult games also helps towards my effort to upgrade from a Grade 6 referee to a Grade 5 referee.
Hopefully I can find a happy medium between the two levels and make some extra cash along the way. Not only will this be my first trip to Hawaii; no one else in the family has ever been to such an exotic location. I’ve been thinking about making it a family event; taking my son (Redkard Waiting to Happen) and the better half (my wife YellowKard) along on the trip. The one struggle with a referee like me who can referee every day if allowed is that it can put a strain on one’s relationship. What better way to make that special someone happy than to say, “You want to go to Hawaii with me?” You won’t have to see me all of the time. You can hang out on the beach while I run around with a bunch of kids that I don’t even know. A wife’s dreams come true. She can have her fun without the hubby hanging around getting in the way.
Lucky for me some opportunities do pop up when you least expect them. I got a call from a referee friend from Wenatchee asking if I could come over and work a high school match in his neck of the woods on Friday. Now that’s a long way to go, but he’s willing to pay for the mileage for the trip. It would become a $200+ game for me. I can only see it this way; $57 for a tank of gas for the trip would mean that I could earn $143 towards my trip. Looks like I’ll be going to Wenatchee on Friday.
Hell! I just want to vent!!!**this will be an on-going section if Dragon gets submissions every week!!!** Submission #1 New girl comes to tryouts and the coach thinks she's a fit. Existing kids embrace the newcomer and all is right with them. Why is it as parents we cannot accept the new parents this same way? No matter what side you're on this always p!$$es me off!
I think we should have parent tryouts too! We could put the ones we like on one sideline and the ones we're not sure about on the other. The coach could walk by look at their shoes, purses, watches, check their wallets for cash. You know in an effort to figure out if you are qualified to pay for this and if he should suck up to you during the year. Coach could then break the parents up into small groups where he can judge their ability to drink *$ and make idle conversation.
If you're lucky you'll get called back for the added third tryout, I'll vent on the "added tryout" later, where you'll be judged again. This time you'll drink a sixer and see if you can still make idle chit chat or do you start behaving inappropriate
Of course this all ends with you waiting by the phone all night long to see if we think you fit in or not. If you're lucky you'll get a call from Sally inviting you into the cool parents club, otherwise you'll have to spend the season down by the 18 with the team photographer.Submission #2 My computer was running VERY slow and wouldn't let me upload anymore pics, so I went and did a reinstall of WinXP... Just put in the disk and do what it says... ok I can do that. I've done a complete format before wth no ill effects.
Not this time! It went all flippen crazy on me! I lost my HD, 99% of my pics and videos, my sound and now I am using a different HD that SUCKS! So all you CP's that haven't had your face plastered on here yet are kinda lucky! Unless I had already sent them to imageshack, I lost them. Now I get to start all over!
This is enough to make me start drinking again!
Gas, Milk, groceries, lights! Its enough to make me want to live in a hut by myself!
I have filled up my car 3 times this week! OK the trip was to Oregon and back, but sheesh! It was 40.00+ dollars each time to fill my Vue. I remember when $20 would almost fill it!
I know that the government is trying to get us to not be dependant on foreign oil, ride mass transit and so on and so forth, but dang it! You built the cars, located and bought the oil and now we are getting stuck with the bill!
WA State has the highest gas tax in the US. Why is that? Don't we have a refinery right here in Anacortes? Does it cost that much to truck it in by ferry
I can see us all now taking the busses to games and practices! OK kids let get on Bus #582 from Sumner and we'll get off 5 blocks down the road from the practice field to walk on a MAJOR HWY! Those drivers are NUTS on River Road!
I'd like to see those CP's that live 50 plus miles from practice to try this. They would be better off taking the train up :mrgreen:BRAT JR'S "YOU TUBE FUN"!!! B U12 XF VS NP

Tarsal Navicular Stress Fracture in a Young Athlete Scenario: Your DD starts complaining of pain in the ankle. Remembers a hard challenge before the pain started and now notes it is tough to explode to the ball and kicking is hard as well. RICE has not helped too much.An Xray was "NEGATIVE" What is going on?
Background: Injuries to the foot are so common in soccer as to be expected. But when pain does not respond to simple treatment then certain conditions need to be addressed. Ankle sprains are easy to identify as are fractures. However stress fractures of the foot may elude workup and be very frustrating to treat. They always need to be thought of in the diagnosis of foot pain.
The tarsal navicular is a U shaped bone that connects the ankle to the foot. It is under much stress due to compression forces and tendon pulls. Its unique position puts it at a crossroads and represents a unique diagnostic challenge.
Etiology:Stress fractures occur in persons who engage in vigorous weight-bearing activities like running and jumping. Yao Ming is the most famous of the Professionals who have recently been diagnosed and subsequently undergone surgery. Many months of recovery loom ahead.
Training errors and overuse conditions are the most common pitfalls leading to tarsal navicular stress fractures. Repetitive muscle contraction and weight bearing without sufficient rest causes excessive skeletal stress that can exceed the ability of the bone to adapt.
Certain sports are associated with a higher risk of tarsal navicular stress fractures :basketball, soccer, hurdlers. There is, however, no structural predisposition to developing tarsal navicular fractures. Excessive pronation or supination have been shown to increase the rate of lower extremity injuries, but there is no causal relation for developing navicular fractures. In other words flat feet or high arches do not predispose you to a stress fracture. Just unlucky!!
Diagnosis:Tarsal navicular stress fractures are often missed by physicians  The average lag time between symptoms and diagnosis is between 4 and 7 months. Accordingly, the best tool for attaining the correct diagnosis is to be alert to the possibility of stress fracture.
Patients initially complain of insidious onset of poorly localized foot pain, especially with running, jumping, or sprinting. Patients typically deny bruising, swelling, or a traumatic history, and symptoms usually abate with rest. If diagnosis is delayed, symptoms can begin to affect walking and daily activities. Initial physical findings are nonfocal, with vague pain radiating along the medial longitudinal arch or along the dorsum of the foot. In later stages, the pain from a tarsal navicular stress fracture localizes along the dorsum of the navicular bone, the appropriately named N spot Symptoms are reproducible with hopping on the affected foot in a plantarflexed position .
The differential diagnosis for tarsal navicular stress fracture is relatively short. Many patients have midfoot sprains or tendinitis mistakenly diagnosed. Metabolic or rheumatologic disease can also result in vague foot or ankle pain. Idiopathic ischemic necrosis of the navicular bone (Kohler disease) might be considered in younger children with dorsal midfoot pain.
Plain radiographs are notoriously unreliable in diagnosing tarsal navicular stress fractures, with only 33% sensitivity. sometimes a small chip may be seen and is the first sign of the stress fracture. It is often dismissed however by many who may not consider stress fracture to be present!!
If navicular stress fracture is suspected, a radionuclide bone scan should be ordered because of its high sensitivity. Focal uptake in the navicular bone indicates either a stress reaction or a fracture. A fine-slice CT scan of the talonavicular joint is required to secure the diagnosis of navicular stress fracture. In many circles, MRI is considered the imaging study of choice for stress fractures. Although MRI for diagnosing tarsal navicular stress fractures is promising, future studies are needed to determine its effectiveness in guiding treatment for this injury.
Treatment: Most experts agree that incomplete tarsal navicular stress fractures with no displacement or angulation can be managed without surgery. Khan et al recommend strict non-weight-bearing cast immobilization as the treatment of choice for nondisplaced, nonangulated navicular stress fractures. Non-weight-bearing cast immobilization for 6 to 8 weeks produces an 86% heal rate of tarsal navicular stress fractures and an average return to sport participation of 5.6 months. Weight bearing during conservative treatment, however, increases the incidence of nonunion and avascular necrosis. Surgery should be recommended for patients with displaced fractures or cases of nonunion, and it might also be a better option for noncompliant patients. Bone grafting, screw fixation, or both are the most common surgical procedures for tarsal navicular fractures. As primary treatment, 83% of surgically treated fractures have good outcomes, with an average return to sport participation of 3.8 months. When surgery is used as a second-line treatment, its success rate drops to 68% with an average return to sport participation of 5.4 months.
Tarsal navicular stress fractures are clinically healed once no tenderness is palpated along the N spot.Patients should subsequently undergo rehabilitation, including muscle strengthening, mobilization, and gradual resumption of activities. Follow-up radiographic studies are not generally useful in showing cure because radiographic findings lag clinical healing and might never completely return to normal. Biomechanical problems should be addressed and corrected. Many of these problems can be improved through flexibility and strengthening exercises. Poor foot biomechanics might be improved with orthotics. Training errors must be addressed as the athlete returns to sports participation.

GIRLS U13 MOBILE SOCCER CLUB! LOWER LA (LOWER ALABAMA)!!!We had a busy week over the last several days.
U14’s:
Two weekends ago the girls went to Montgomery to play the defending D2 champions. The girls played extremely well. We started with only 10 players (2 girls had last minute change of plans) and lost our right fullback 5 minutes into the game. The girls were still able to tie 1-1. They played with some great heart and fire that day.
Last weekend we had a rough weekend. Our right fullback was still not back so we had to borrow a couple of U12 players to help. The girls fought hard with 12 girls in temperatures in the upper 80’s but ending up losing the first three games by one goal that was scored in the last three minutes of the game. We did finish strong by holding the eventual champions to a 0-0 tie. Well done ladies.
We are busy training now in preparations for our next tournament on April 19th in Destin, FL. We are looking forward to playing some soccer and hanging out on the white sandy beaches of the Gulf.
U10’s:
The girls played well two weekends ago at a play date (like a round robin). In the first game they tied the team that beat them four weeks early 5-0. Lil’r Tuck is settling in nice at fullback. I know it is early to put a DD in a position at this age but she truly enjoys it and is doing well. In the second game we lost 3-0 to a team that was half boys. There is a difficulty getting enough girls for some clubs to have a true girls team and most teams are co-ed. We are looking forward to the Destin tournament with this team as well as we believe there will be a true girls division.
On the subject of try-outs and the season I want to give you all an overview of our season.
June: Tryouts
August – October: Tournaments and league games
November: State-cup tournaments
January: Most teams start up the Fall season. Each player registers again. Most older teams stop playing as Alabama does not allow club and school play at the same time. This is why older DD’s team is a combination of U12, U13, and U14. We are actually about a U13.1 team when we calculated it (tough being an engineer).
I hope to have more for you later.
Glad to hear from you again Big Tuck!!

"COACHS CORNER!"This weeks topic for the coach is
Best coachs? The coach must know a lot of other coachs. Which club in Washington in their opinion has the greatest compulation of good coachs?
This actually may be my toughest question. Its tough because I personally believe any coach willing to spend the time to learn and work with our kids i a good coach. However, I would say for a goup of very talented coaches I would start at crossfire. Which shouldn't be a surprise they have the money to bring quality coaches in, and the amount of teams to get them all their own. However I'm starting to see an interesting trend. Their coaches are starting to go out and become DOC's at other clubs. This is great for the game. It's amazing what a great coach as a DOC can do for a clubs success. Besides crossfire I really like NWN, WPFC, and Eastsides line up of coaches.
Great job coach, keep up the great work! "VIEW FROM BEHIND THE WHISTLE"Myths of the Game and other NonsenseWhen is a goalie in "control" of the ball. I have seen goalies loose the ball or drop it and a player knock it in the goal and the ref calls the goalie had it. Can you clarify this situation?
Law 12
Decision 2The goalkeeper is considered to be in control of the ball by touching it with any part of his hand or arms. Possession of the ball includes the goalkeeper deliberately parrying the ball, but does not include the circumstances where, in the opinion of the referee, the ball rebounds accidentally from the goalkeeper, for example after he has made a save. The goalie is in possession or "control" of the ball when they have it trapped between any part of the arm/hand/finger and another surface. One finger on the ball holding it to the ground is sufficient to establish possession.
If the ball comes loose, the referee will make a decision based on whether in his/her opinion the goalkeeper had possession and was
unfairly interfered with in that possession. You or I might not see the events in the same way, but it's what and how the referee sees the incident that counts.
Once the GK has possession, they cannot be charged or challenged for the ball in any way. If the GK bobbles or drops the ball through no action from an opponent, then an opponent can play the ball (they must still do so safely).
The referee has much leeway to judge what is fair given the players' age, skill, level of play, and field conditions. In a U10 rec match where a keeper drops the ball in a defensive reaction to a hard charging opponent twice their size, a referee would be within his discretion to whistle a foul and disallow a goal even if there's no contact with the GK.
In a U17 competitive match a GK jumps above other players to catch a ball. As the GK comes down off balance on top of other players, the ball slips out of her hands and an opponent knees the ball into the goal. If the referee is of the opinion the opponents played fairly – Good goal!
For games under WSYSA, the following applies from the Competition Playing Rules:
301.7 Charging the Goalkeeper(a) The following Rule applies to all competitions under the jurisdiction of the WSYSA:
(b) In all Under-11 age groups and below: No player shall make physical contact with the goalkeeper, or attempt to play the ball once the goalkeeper has control of the ball in any manner and to any degree whatsoever. For infringement of this special Rule, an indirect kick shall be awarded.
(c) In all Under-12 age groups and above: No player shall make physical contact with the goalkeeper WITHIN THE GOAL AREA, harass the goalkeeper, or attempt to play the ball once the goalkeeper has control of the ball in any manner and to any degree whatsoever. For infringement of this special Rule, an indirect kick shall be awarded.
(d) Note: Also included in "having control of the ball" is, if the goalkeeper holds the ball on the ground with one or both hands.
Thanks Ref! Love your intelligence every week! "Dear Eggy"Dear Eggy
How do you keep soccer shoes dry this time of year?
It seems like they are always wet.
Thanks,
Trench Foot Dear Trench Foot,
I know of a couple of ways to dry out soccer boots. 1. Their is an electric boot dryer that blows air into the shoes and dries them out. You can usually find them at farming stores. 2. Stuffing the shoes with newspaper works also, but you have to remember to change out the paper. and 3. turn them upside down over a forced air heating duct. This tend to spread the ordor around so use the duct in your little brothers room.
Good luck,
Eggy
Dear Eggy,
How are CP's supposed to cheer on the sidelines during the game? I always want to yell "pass it to suzie" or "SHOOT" during the game.
Just saying "GO TEAM" gets boring.
Thanks,
Loud Dad Dear Loud Dad,
My recomendation is that you limited your cheering to "Good Job," "Nice Shot," and "Excellent Pass." If you deviate from those safe phrases you are subject to ridicule on soccer forums. Using phrases like the one's in your example leads coaches to getting angry. They start to think you are trying to coach from the sidelines. I personally don't follow my guidelines and end up in trouble on the way home from Mrs. Eggy or Lil Eggy.
Good Luck and suck on a sucker during the game,
Eggy

Well most of us have had that big parent meeting this year. Why not just call it what it is... the “who to make your check out to and for how much this year meeting"
Our fees have gone up 26% this year and why not? CPs just nodding and blindly going along with the explanations of the higher costs. Shoot if the club saw how easy this would be accepted they may well of tried for 30%.
Lets look a bit closer at some of the reasons given for the increases.
1) Coaches fees have gone up. “In this highly competitive market we have to pay more to get the best coaching talent” Boy this is a chicken and the egg thing for sure. Is our paying more making some other club have to pay more? Where does it all stop?
2) “Field prices have gone up” Great! Our property taxes have been going up about double inflation to pay for making fields for schools and then we still get charged more by these schools.
3) “Tournament prices go up as the players get older.” Do these guys not realize we have internet access at home and can go look up the fees? Almost none of the tournament fees go up after U-11.
4) “Prices overall are going up” Last year inflation was 2.3% Might be my imagination but this seams a lot lower than 26%.
Many would agree Marta is the best female soccer player in the world. Few know though that she comes from a poor family. How many Martas are going to get left behind in the US? Unless we want soccer to become a sport where only a few privileged players can participate at the high level clubs had better get a grip on run away costs.
Great article!
